As mentioned in elearn magazine "how mentors can improve online graduate student attrition rates", I concur with Hyder and Gilliam when mentioning "mentoring can be beneficial to any student who may need help" (2015). I believe that many administrators feel because graduate, doctoral and law students are at a peak in their education, they do not require nor need the effective monitoring and advising that a four-year under graduate student receive. Not only can mentors help graduate students succeed, but it can be more beneficial to "online graduate students by providing support whether through challenges, vision, or a climate of trust" (2015). Most graduate students who take online classes already have the responsibility of a full-time job, therefore, coming home to sit in front of a computer for multiple hours at-a-time while juggling home chores, cooking, cleaning, taking care of children (if any), and spouses (if any) is exhausting. Without having that one person to encourage you or follow up with you periodically to find out how online graduate school is holding up can be the make or breaking point. At least for me it is!

Hi Wanda, what do you think of students partnering to support each other? Best, Helen.
